Our hair is our crowning glory. We go to salons at least twice or once a month for trimming, hair rebonding, to get a new hair color or highlights, to make ourselves pretty and presentable all the time. But, that can damage your hair in the long run, so we will go and see our favorite hair-dresser to beautify us. Dust, smoke and even when we perspire. Our scalp releases oil that will make our hair sticky and there is when a dandruff starts to build up.
Shampooing and conditioning your hair can help to make your hair it softer and fragrant, it is not enough to control that stubborn dandruff, though. That is why so many of us will visit the friendly neighborhood. The salon. But, what if we are in a tight budget and we are saving money for the family and for our kids needs? Are you going to decline your personal needs? Nuh-uh! There is one simple and easy way to take care of your precious hair. Without spending much. I am doing it myself. I started doing this when I was in high school and this method takes care of my hair from then on.
Here is how:
You will need one fresh coconut. When you go to a market, choose a cocoonut with a dark shell. The darker the shell, the milky the coconut.
Grate the fresh coconut meat. DON'T ADD WATER!
After grating all the coconut meat, gather a handful of, squeeze it and let the milk comes out. Do the same thing with the rest of the coconut meat.
Use a deep wok or skillet, there is where you will put the coconut milk.
Turn your oven or stove in a medium heat and let the coconut milk to boil. You can stir it occassionally.
Notice that the coconut milk starts to separate from its natural oil. You can turn the oven in a low heat.
Once the coconut milk totally separates from the oil, you will see that the coconut milk residue turns to brown.
Let it cool and put the oil in a small bowl.
Use a clean cloth to sieve the oil and remove the small particles or residues.
Then you can start applying the oil onto your scalp. Use a cotton ball and rub it onto your scalp. Do it as much as you want to. It won't damage your hair nor your scalp because it comes from a natural oil and has no chemicals. After doing that, cover your hair with a towel damp in a warm water or you can just use plastic grocery bag if shower cap is not available. That's what I do. Some may not like the smell of the coconut oil, but it's all worth it.
Leave it for at least an hour before you wash your hair. You can shampoo and use conditioner still, but you will notice that your hair is more softer and silkier. If you have a hair-dye or a highlights, that won't affect your hair colors. It will become more glossy and softer.
If you want to do it at night and leave your hair with your homemade hot oil on it? That's alright. Sure you can do that. Just wash your hair first thing in the morning because you would not want to smells like a cocojam, hahaha. So there! We don't have to spend our extra saved money for the salon. You love your hair, and it only needs your attention, give it a special treatment, with a personal touch.
This brings back childhood memories...when I was a child we just
added sugar to the brown residue left over from heating the coconut
milk - locally called latik - and ate it with rice. When we had
rice dumplings we put it on top with sugar and it was heaven! Of
course my mom and aunts used the oil not just for cooking but for
their hair (and skin too).
Yeah! =) I love that one, too. Latik is what we call that. We
put that latik on top of "biko" or sweetened gluten rice, if that;s
what we should call it. Thanks for the comment, Karina. =)
